Taltarni Pyrenees Shiraz was first made in 1977. Taltarni Shiraz exemplifies the Pyrenees regional benchmark style, sourced from mature and carefully nurtured Shiraz vines from Taltarni’s estate. The estate has a selection of fruit for this wine from an old Victorian Shiraz clone planted in 1864.
1987 was a warm summer with cooler nights allowing the fruit to ripen evenly with great flavour, colour and tannin structure.
The wine was kept in small parcels of fruit for ease of working through out its fermentation. The hand plunging and skins work enabled great tannin and phenolic extraction creating a perfectly balanced and structured wine. It underwent malolactic fermentation in new to 4 year old French oak allowing beautiful oak integration which added another string to the bow of an already elegant wine.
Winemaker Comments
This wine amazingly is still showing lovely fruit considering its age. There is great staying power in this particular vintage which is shown by its ability to age with grace. Although the colour has lightened to a pale Red brown hue over time the wine exhibits exactly what the Pyrenees can offer. On the nose it reveals hints of leather and smoky oak and traces of chocolate and plum while on the palate it shows great style with silky gracefully aged tannins and a balanced palate.
Alcohol by volume: 13.0%
