OUR ENVIRONMENT

Taltarni has been safeguarding this land for 50 years, honouring its century-long winemaking history and preparing it for the next thousand. Our focus on regenerative practices ensures we leave the land better than we found it, preserving its character for future generations to enjoy.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, from vineyard to winery. By caring for the land, we cultivate vibrant grapes that reflect the unique terroir, while our innovative practices protect the environment—nurturing soil, conserving energy, and crafting award-winning wines that are as sustainable as they are exceptional.

INSECTARIUM

Our ‘insectarium’ is a vegetation corridor of more than 2000 native plants that provide pollen and nectar for a range of beneficial insects.

This helps us dramatically reduce our use of pesticides and chemicals by 80%.

Taltarni was the first winery to adopt an insectariums, and we now share this knowledge nationally and globally.

BIODIVERSITY

We protect and nurture local flora and fauna.

  • Planting 600 to 1200 native shrubs annually to prevent soil erosion and rehabilitate bushland, boosting wildlife.
  • Conducting native grass trials to reduce herbicide use and support beneficial insects.
  • Using natural products like seaweed and soil stimulants to enhance soil and canopy health.
  • Propagating native plants from the vineyard and replanting them in ‘insectariums.’
  • Rolling cover crops to reduce fuel use, compaction, and retain soil moisture.
  • Avoiding Diuron and Simazine to protect groundwater.
  • Monitoring for PD and spraying only when necessary.
  • Restocking dams with native fish.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

We manage waste responsibly.

  • We recycle old vines by mulching them along with grape marc, composted cow manure, and home-grown hay, which is returned to the vineyard.
  • Poly pipes from dismantled blocks are recycled into products like plastic posts.
  • Engine oils are collected for waste management, and wastewater is recycled for paddock irrigation.
  • We're also committed to reducing packaging impact through our membership in the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC).

THE WINERY

We’re continually improving the energy efficiency of the winery.

  • Solar panels on the roof of the winery to supply cleaner and greener renewable energy
  • Implementing self-sufficiency programs to reduce power and water usage in the winery, including storing and using water collected from our roof
  • Locally sourced produce served at cellar door to reduce food miles.
